A full denture replaces all the teeth in an upper or lower jaw. A partial denture fills the gaps where some natural teeth remain, and clasps or rests onto those teeth for support. Which is appropriate depends on how many teeth are missing and the condition of the ones that remain, which we assess at your appointment.

How dentures compare with bridges and implants

Dentures are not the only way to replace missing teeth, and we would rather you understood the alternatives before deciding.

• Dentures are removable, replace several teeth at once, and involve no surgery
• A bridge is fixed in place, but relies on the teeth either side for support
• Implants are fixed and freestanding, but involve surgery and a longer treatment period

What to expect

Making a denture takes several appointments: impressions of your mouth, a try-in stage so the fit, bite and appearance can be checked, and the fit of the finished denture. Because each stage is checked with you before the next, the exact number of visits varies from case to case.

New dentures usually take a little getting used to. Eating and speaking can feel different at first, and most people find this settles as the muscles adapt. If a denture rubs or feels uneven, tell us, as small adjustments are a normal part of the process rather than a sign something is wrong.

Looking after them

Dentures should be cleaned daily and taken out overnight unless we have advised otherwise. Your mouth continues to change over time, so a denture that fits well today may need adjusting or relining later. Keeping up routine examinations lets us check the fit and the health of the tissues underneath.
