Dental pain rarely arrives at a convenient moment. If something has broken, come loose or started to hurt, the first step is simply to call us — we will talk through what has happened and arrange an appointment to get you comfortable.

What counts as a dental emergency

These are the problems we most often see at short notice:

• Toothache that keeps you awake, or that painkillers no longer control
• Facial swelling around a tooth or in the gum
• A knocked-out or displaced tooth after an accident
• A broken or chipped tooth, particularly if it is sharp or sensitive
• A lost filling, crown or bridge
• Bleeding that will not settle after an extraction
• Pain or swelling around a wisdom tooth

If a permanent tooth has been knocked out, handle it by the crown rather than the root, and if you can, put it back into the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth. If you cannot, keep it in milk and call us straight away — time matters with a knocked-out tooth.

What it costs

The emergency appointment fee covers the assessment, any X-rays needed and treatment to relieve the immediate problem. Anything further — a filling, root canal treatment or an extraction — is quoted and agreed with you before we begin. Nothing is carried out without your say-so.

What happens when you come in

You do not need to be a registered patient. We see new patients for emergency appointments, and you are welcome to stay with us afterwards or go back to your own dentist for ongoing care — whichever you prefer.

We will examine the tooth, take an X-ray if one is needed, and get you out of pain. Where the underlying problem needs more time than an emergency appointment allows, we will stabilise it, explain the options and book you back in for the definitive treatment.

When we are open

Monday to Friday, 9:00–13:00 and 13:30–17:30. Saturdays 9:00–16:00. Call 0207 233 5600 as early in the day as you can — the sooner we know, the more options we have.
