Wisdom teeth are the last molars to come through, usually in your late teens or twenties. Many cause no trouble at all and are best left alone. Others become impacted, meaning there is not enough room for them to come through properly, and those are the ones that tend to cause problems.

Removed here, rather than a hospital referral

Complex and impacted wisdom teeth are often referred on to hospital, which can mean a long wait. Our dentist with a specialist interest in implants and oral surgery is able to remove many of these cases here at the practice instead, in familiar surroundings and usually far sooner.

Not every case is suitable, and we will tell you honestly if yours is one that genuinely belongs in a hospital setting. That judgement is part of the assessment.

When a wisdom tooth needs to come out

• Repeated episodes of pain, swelling or infection around the tooth
• Decay in the wisdom tooth, or in the molar in front of it, that cannot be restored
• Gum infection around a partly erupted tooth that keeps recurring
• A cyst or other change visible on a radiograph

A wisdom tooth that is causing no symptoms and no damage does not automatically need removing. If yours is not causing trouble, we will say so.

What the assessment involves

We take a radiograph to see the shape and position of the roots and how close they lie to the nerve in the lower jaw. Where more detail is needed, a CBCT 3D scan gives a much clearer picture of that relationship. This is what determines whether removal is straightforward, whether it needs a surgical approach, and what the risks are in your particular case.

You will get a clear explanation of what is involved and a written plan with the fee before anything is booked.

Recovery

Removal is normally carried out under local anaesthetic, so the area is fully numb. Afterwards, some swelling and discomfort for a few days is usual, and is managed with ordinary painkillers and the aftercare instructions we give you. Most people plan for a quiet day or two afterwards.
